THE HEMLOCK — Chronicle of Socrates' last day: thirty days in chains, a ship from Delos, and a rooster never paid for

Athens, spring 399 BC. The sacred ship returns from Delos and the sentence can finally be carried out. Socrates has spent thirty days in chains and has refused the escape Crito bought from the jailer. Before dusk he drinks the cup and leaves one instruction: a rooster for Asclepius.

Socrates seated on a cot in the Athenian prison, surrounded by three young disciples, as a jailer hands him a clay cup of hemlock.
