EXCLUSIVE: The botanical startup 'Wheat' executes a hostile takeover and enslaves humanity
They promised food security and exponential scalability, but the new "Terms and Conditions" of the sedentary life force the Sapiens to work from dawn to dusk.
9500 BC
For the last 2.5 million years, we humans have been the ultimate freelancers. Our nomadic business model, built on hunting and gathering, guaranteed us a working week of barely 35 hours, a rich and diversified diet, and an enviable geographic flexibility. Yet an aggressive botanical startup out of the Near East has just burst onto the scene to change the rules of the game. Its name is Wheat, and it has just executed the greatest hostile takeover in history.
Until recently, wheat was just another wild grass, a marginal player with a minuscule market share in the Eastern Mediterranean. But its developers have shipped an irresistible killer app: the Agricultural Revolution.
Wheat's sales pitch was perfect. It promised the bands of Sapiens a centralized platform where food would grow in a single place, eliminating the need to move around. "Invest your time in us," its algorithm seemed to say, "and we will guarantee you long-term security and exponential demographic growth."
Blinded by the promise of scaling our species, millions of Sapiens have accepted the new Terms and Conditions without reading the fine print. And the hidden price of this subscription is proving to be devastating.

The "exponential growth" fraud
Far from setting us free, the Wheat ecosystem has turned us into its 24/7 maintenance crew. This plant is incredibly demanding with its hardware: it does not like rocks, so the Sapiens are breaking their backs clearing fields. It refuses to share its resources, forcing us to rip out weeds under a scorching sun. And its security system is nonexistent, compelling us to build fences and keep night watch against pests and competitors.
"We thought we were domesticating wheat, but wheat has domesticated us," confesses a former hunter turned CEO of a farm in Jericho. "I used to eat berries, gazelle and mushrooms. Now my diet is 90% cereal porridge. My immune system is failing and the new sedentary work environment has given me hernias and arthritis. But I can't quit; I have five children to feed thanks to our new demographic 'success'."
Trapped in the net
From a purely evolutionary perspective (the metric that measures success by the number of copies of DNA), Wheat is nature's new unicorn. It has used Homo sapiens as cheap labor to spread across the entire globe.
We, on the other hand, have fallen into the trap of luxury. What began as a temporary four-week camp to process wild grains has become a total dependency. The population has grown so large that it is mathematically impossible to return to our old freelance model. We have burned our boats.
The Agricultural Revolution is not a leap forward in human progress; it is a pyramid scheme on a global scale. Wheat has hacked us.
