DISRUPTIVE LAUNCH: Sapiens unveils "Fiction 1.0", the cognitive patch that will wipe out the Neanderthals
The new language update enables social cloud computing: talking about things that do not exist in order to scale cooperation beyond the 150-user ceiling.
70,000 BC.
For hundreds of thousands of years, the hominin market has been stagnant. The various species of the genus Homo, including our robust European competitors, the Neanderthals, ran on a basic communication system. Their data-transfer protocol was useful but limited to objective reality: "Careful, a lion at the river!". Now, however, a random genetic mutation has just installed a massive update in the brains of the Homo sapiens of East Africa. They are calling it the Cognitive Revolution, and it is about to monopolize the planet.
Our species' historic problem has always been scalability. Prehistoric sociologists have shown that the maximum size of a human social network bound together by gossip is around 150 individuals. Try to load more users onto the same tribal server and the social order destabilizes, and the band splits. The apes' hardware simply cannot process that many interpersonal relationships.
But the developers at Sapiens have found a brilliant shortcut in the code: Fiction 1.0.

The killer app of collective imagination
The truly disruptive feature of this new language is not the ability to transmit information about lions or bison, but the ability to transmit information about entities that do not exist in the physical world.
Thanks to Fiction 1.0, Sapiens can now upload concepts to a shared "cloud": guardian spirits, creation myths, tribal totems and, in future updates, gods, nations and limited liability companies.
"It's a paradigm shift," explains a local shaman, one of the technology's first early adopters. "You'll never convince a monkey to hand over a banana by promising it infinite bananas in monkey heaven after it dies. But Sapiens actually believe it now. And by believing in the same virtual reality, millions of strangers can synchronize their behavior."
The end of Neanderthal market share
This technological innovation is a death sentence for the other human species. In a one-on-one physical benchmark, a Neanderthal would tear a Sapiens apart like a rag doll. But conflicts are no longer fought in single-player mode.
While Neanderthals remain limited to cooperating in small groups based on intimate acquaintance (Reality 1.0), Sapiens can organize networks of massive, flexible cooperation. Fifty Neanderthals operating on static patterns are no match for five hundred versatile Sapiens, bound together by belief in a common tribal spirit, capable of planning complex ambushes and setting up long-distance trade routes to exchange shells and obsidian.
History has just declared its independence from biology. With the installation of Fiction 1.0, Sapiens have unlocked the fast lane of cultural evolution. Brace yourselves, because this African startup is about to expand across all of Eurasia, and it will not be taking prisoners.
